Abstract： In this paper， the characteristics of the causes of the ancient city of Gaoyou flat organization is discussed，such as declination towards，spatial layout near water without hydrophilic，space self-organization and coordination relationship，continuation of history and etc. And then indigenous definition and generating elements and the role of the relationship of ancient city are discussed. Conclusion is made that indigenous of ancient city is an adaptive expression of natural and cultural environment，and its generation process has the characteristics of self-organization. Its generation is inseparable from the direct， indirect， diffusion in three areas which are produced by the basic elements of nature， people， cities and etc.， and also is inseparable from temporal stability condition.
